The Corona virus pandemic seems to have came out of nowhere, and hit us hard. We have a major health crisis around the world, and we need to do everything we can to stay healthy. Because our immune system is our first line of defense, we need to constantly feed our bodies immune boosting foods. Based on my own experience and quite a bit of research, I’m sharing the 3 immune boosting foods you need now. I’m also sharing below the recipe for one of my favorite immune strengthening beverages that made the list.
Vitamin C
Most of us turn to vitamin C once we have caught a cold, that’s because it helps build our immune system. But the truth is we need this nutrient on a regular. Vitamin C is thought to increase the production of white blood cells, which are a major key in fighting off infections. Citrus fruits are high in vitamin C, and there’s such a variety to choose from. Because our bodies don’t produce or store it, we need to ingest some form of vitamin C daily for continued health. Fun fact: If you think citrus fruits have the most vitamin C of any fruit or vegetable, think again. Red bell peppers contain almost 3 times as much vitamin C as an orange.
Garlic
You can find garlic in almost every cuisine in the world, and its one of my favorite veggies. It adds a bit of zing to your food and its vital for your health. When I was a kid I noticed that my dad kept a bottle filled with garlic bulbs and water in the fridge. He would take a shot of it every morning. He also worked outdoors all year long. Now I understand that doing this was part of his way of keeping his immune system strong. Drinking garlic water has its perks, but eating it provides the body with much more of its benefits.
Garlics immune boosting properties seem to come from a heavy concentration of sulphur containing compounds like Allicin. Try to incorporate garlic into your diet at least once a day.
Golden Milk
Now can we talk about a beverage that I absolutely love? Its jammed packed with numerous immune boosting ingredients, and it taste delicious too. Golden milk has so many amazing benefits, and boosting our immune system just happens to be one of them. Golden milk has been known to improve ones mood, reduce inflammation in the body and lower blood sugar levels. This is just a few of is benefits. The key ingredients in golden milk are rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants fight cell damage, and are essential to the functioning of our cells. There have been many studies confirming that diets high in antioxidants may lower our risk of infections and disease.
My Favorite Golden Milk recipe
- 1 1/2 cups light coconut milk (canned is best)
- 1 1/2 cups unseated plain almond milk
- 1 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
- 1 1/4 tsp ginger (ground)
- 1 whole cinnamon stick (or 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon)
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 pinch of ground black pepper
- sweetener of choice ( I love 1 tbsp of maple syrup)
- Add all ingredients to a small sauce pan, starting with the milks.
- Whisk to combine and warm over medium heat. Heat until hot to the touch, but not boiling.
- Turn off heat, and taste to adjust flavor. Add more sweetener, or more turmeric or ginger for intense spice.
